ANGER CONTROL PROBLEMS

Introduction

Anger is often viewed as a single or unitary emotion. However, anger is expressed in different forms and occurs on a continuum from frustration to rage. Anger can be expressed in a constructive manner or in a destructive and aggressive fashion. There are multiple reasons why an individual might experience excessive anger. These include traumatic brain injury, metabolic or hormonal imbalance, learned aggression, and problems in coping with frustration to name a few. Management of anger and frustration is crucial for success in one's relationship and career.

Evaluation and Assessment

Evaluation of anger is an important first step in the management of anger. An in-depth clinical interview, along with formal measures of anger provides an understanding of the problem. This type of assessment leads to a better understanding of which interventions may provide both immediate and long-term improvement of the problem.

Treatment
Treatment of excessive anger involves a combination of easily understood and well validated cognitive-behavioral techniques for managing eruptive emotions and controlling hostility. Treatment at CRG is provided on an individual basis with frequent involvement of one's significant other or family members as appropriate.
